A fairly recent problem but its driving me crazy. I have several players inc. GOM, CLASSIC, WINAMP but none of them will now open up an AVI video despite having done so previously. Whats worse is that Windows Explorer closes down, the player closes down - and the same with Dr. Watson!

I suspected the lack of memory but it is happy to play an MPEG video, just flatly refuses to handle an AVI. It even stops me from loading AVI's into other programs like Zune Converter pro 7.0

I have carefully scanned for viruses, rootkits and malware but my pc is clean, but strangely, when I tried system restore, it was mysteriously switched off and would not let me return to the month of March.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp, but to no avail. I have Win rar Archiver and Power ISO, is it likely that these may be the root cause of the problem?

Any suggestions would be well appreciated,

    Thank you.

I have Ultra VNC Viewer for instance so that I can keep check (not snoop) on my 2 teenage daughters computer upstairs, plus Autoroute which I use in my capacity as a coach driver (and I can't find my disc )

sounds like a corruption of the registry , specially with the other problems you are having -- unless your system is overclocked ?

cant really suggest what to do to fix it other than a restore (which you can not do) , windows repair , system file check (built into windows) or a reformat

I too, think that the problem may lie within the registry, I have several programs, Registry Mechanic, Reg Scrub etc - - but to be honest, I do not understand the registry enough to mess about with it and would not like to make matters worse

When you say "overclocked," does this mean that most if not all of the HD is being used? I haven't come across this word before.

overclocked means that your computer is running at a higher rate than the cpu was spec'd for ... many systems will run ok like this -- some will not ..

sometimes a fake cpu is mismarked as to its 'speed' and this will cause overclocking unknowingly

I think you are nearer the mark with the above! How do you do a system File Check? I have been flagged twice today, First for a missing dll and a while back for a missing dna? Both times it was cured with a restart but there is something fundamentally wrong with my files. I don't think its memory or the m/board as it can play large mpeg vids with no problem at all.

    dns ...

dns server cache can not be cleared probably ... ive seen this on people system a whole lot lately for some reason and trying to flush the dns doenst work - i digress ...

To run the system file checker press Start, Run, and then type in SFC followed by its options.

The most common usage of SFC is this:

    SFC /scannow

This causes SFC to scan your system immediately. SFC can take a few minutes to run. Have your installation CD or equivalent available in case SFC needs to replace a damaged file.

While it's not documented anywhere, if SFC replaces any system files I'd reboot. I just like to make absolutely certain that the file replacement actually takes effect.

The Microsoft knowledgebase includes more detailed SFC documentation including more options to check at boot time, control the size of the system file protection cache, and so on. Speaking of which, the knowledgebase also includes System File Protection documentation covering the mechanism Windows XP uses to keep your system files safe automatically. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310747

Tried all you said BJ, rebooted - - but still no joy I went out and bought an external H/Drive today and tried simply transferring one of my AVI films to the new drive. It done it - but Windows Explorer closed down during the process - - - - A reformat looks more and more likely

    Yippeeeee Done it!!

Thanks to a link on this forum - - https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=327351 The query wasn't answered, but got me to thinking about K-Lite codec pack which I had installed for my media player classic! I uninstalled the codec pack- - - and I'm back to watching my videos!

I will have to hunt around for a codec to play XVID on my WMP now as it must have taken out some of those but I have many more players that were not affected after removing K-Lite. Many thanks to all those that have helped me on this great site
