Been doing a few MPEG2 to DVD conversions using NeroVision. The latter cops a bit of flak for its quality.

Just wondering if anyone can suggest better quality apps for this and where I can read about terminology for such conversion from MPEG2 to DVD (VOB files) . For example i have no idea about bit rate for DVD compatibility or frame rate or how you control this in the conversion.

Where can I read about all of this DVD creation in a form that a newbie can understand.

Thanks everyone for this great site.

The first place I would look is to the upper left for 'WHAT IS' DVD. That will show you the DVD specifications and format. Since you are in PAL land, that's the one you want to look at.

Generally a DVD uses MPEG-2 format, but MPEG-1 works as well.

Depending on what format you start with, you will need to encode your videos with a MPEG encoder to a DVD compliant MPEG format. You can use MP2 or AC3 audio formats. There are many MPEG encoders, look to our 'Tools' section to the left.

After you have a compliant MPEG, you need a authoring program to create the DVD format. Again, look to 'Tools'.

For guides on these operations, look to 'CONVERT' and "AUTHOR' at, guess what, the left.

What I often use is TMPGEnc encoder and TMPGEnc DVD Author. They are both easy to use. The encoder is a bit slow compared to others, but again, easy.

There are freeware programs for both operations. HC, QuEnc are two freeware encoders. For authoring, DVD Authorgui or GUI for dvdauthor are good freeware authoring programs.

For faster encoders, look to CCE or Mainconcept. For more advanced authoring programs, DVD Lab Pro is one to look into.
