I have a number of IDE hard disks.
I don't want to go buying an external enclosure for everyone of them because it's too expensive.

Is there a tower maybe or some hot swappable device i can plug about 10 IDE's into on my pc to make them powered by USB maybe there's a pc tower that i cna slot them into or something?

    Cheers guys.

    I am in Australia btw

    For a minimalist approach,

I bought several USB2 enclosures until I found this. Just plug it into a bare drive and the other end into the USB2 port and use it.

Its a quick way to hook up any type of drive.

Here it is connected to a 200GB Maxtor PATA.

There is a separate power supply to power the drive. In this configuration the BYTECC device is powered off the USB2 port. Drive speed is identical to my other USB2 enclosures.

I have one of those also. It's handy for testing hard drives without opening up the computer case and plugging them in. It also works with 2.5" laptop drives if you need to format one of those for laptop installation.

I was going to get one of those also, but if you have external SATA connectivity on your PC (as well as the ability to power the hard drive), I decided to go for an IDE to SATA adapter, as SATA offers faster speeds than USB 2.0

I purchased a Abit Serillel2 for connecting any IDE drives to my PC via SATA:

Obviously, you still need to power the hard drive in some way.

www.addonics.com sells mini towers. I use a four slot tower that connects four IDE drives via one USB cable.

Oooh, that place has some good prices on backplanes for enclosures and tower cases. $130 for a 5-drive backplane with disk trays is very reasonable. Just need to make sure the PSU can supply the juice to those drives should they, and all the others installed in your PC, decide to spin up simultaneously.

  11. Aviod old and cheap external PATA USB adapter. My last one from Maddog can't burn DVD+R/W, and won't boot a laptop. I bough a new unbrand one, and all is fine.

Stay away from Maddog regardless of the item. My friend has had the worst luck with their products. First a video card of their physically caught fire, then the RMA replacement went after only a few months, and then most recently his new Maddog PSU blew sparks and took his motherboard with it.

The drives need a separate power supply.
