Is it possible to take a 320x240 resolution video clip and make it so it looks good and crisp (i.e. no block effect) on a standalone dvd player/televison set? Right now I'm using TMPGEnc to encode the video files to mpg. I load the video-cd ntsc template, then under settings, I'm kind of unclear what to do. The newly encoded file is always a lot bigger than the original one, even if it's mpg to mpg, but the quality and size remain the same. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Also, is this possible with this template, or do I have to choose one of the higher resolution dvd templates?

mm4654,
sorry, but you have to make it just
a tad big more bigger. 352x240 to
be exact.
You can sometimes get the 320x240
to actually burn to cd, but it will
not size to your tv - at least as
far as I understand it, tv's are
352x240, NOT 320x240!
so, when you play a 320x240, as I
have, it's distorted or kindof
shrunk to upper left corner - and
give the illusion of great quality,
when in all actuallity, it's just
shrunken some more on tv.
the res. you're looking for is
352x240.

So if I encode the 320x240 file to a 352x240 file, and even if it doesn't look good and crisp on the computer full screen, it'll look good and crisp on a TV? Also, why does the newly encoded file always a lot larger if it looks the same as the original on the computer?
Thanks. -
mm4654,
As to your first question, I can't
agree to good and crisp, but from
a newbie point of view, then yes.
But, as an experienced, no. ...not
as crisp.
But, moving from 320x240 to 352x240
isn't too bad. When you view it
on your TV, its not really stretch
ing it at all. so, there's no
distortion. But if the clip is
another res. ie, 320 or 480, then
yes, your tv will resize it and
hence, some distortion. Usually,
going from a higher res. ie, 480,
or 704, or 720 and resizng downto
352 (tv) will give good smooth and
or sharp resize quality, but going
up mostly doesn't. But, it's just
a small move up (you 320) I don't
think you'll notice too much of
any quality digration. I think it
will be just fine.
Now, as to your 2nd quesiton. I'm
afraid that I don't understand it.
Can you refrase it?

Thanks for your help. As for the second quesion, I noticed that the newly encoded files are larger in size(MB). For instance a video clip that was about 1.4 mb gave a new file of about 5.1 mb after encoding, and the quality appears to be the same.

mm4654,
I don't know what your source is,
ie, divX or something.
also, maybe you used a higher bit
rate or made a slight change in
the encoding parameters ie, filters
etc.
Also, they say that changing the
res. doesn't increase in size, but
it does, but not that much. 1mb
here or there for instance.
