Hi, and thanks everyone for your help in advance! I have nearly set up my Philips DVD 3042 (region 2) to feed into my US Philips flatscreen TV here in NY. I successfully changed the region format from 2 to 1, but when I insert a region 1 disc, the picture is still B&W. I followed the manual and tried changing the video format from PAL to NTSC but it doesn't seem to "take." It's a lovely black and white picture but I really don't want to limit myself to art movies. Any suggestions?

You are on the right track. Sounds like the player is still outputing a PAL signal to your NTSC TV. In the video setup section of the dvd player, there should be an output or TV type choice. In your case, you need to select NTSC or Multi. I don't have that model, but typically the changes are instantaneous. Once it is changed, just exit the menu.

I am wondering if your European Philips DVD player is not outputting a true NTSC signal but that psuedo-NTSC that is compatible with PAL. If I'm right, you'll have to buy another DVD player. I know of no way to test it, but if you change the video output in the setup menu to NTSC, it SHOULD work.

The only other thing I can think of is to ask what type of connection you have from the DVD player to the TV. When I got my HD TV, I had to go into the setup menu on my Philips DVD player (different model from yours) and tell it to use the component outputs. I originally connected an S-video cable from the DVD player to the TV for testing and left it. Now when I switch inputs on the TV, the old S-video input is always in crystal clear black and white, but the component input is in color and correct. So it could be that you have not properly configured the type of output on your player and your player is configured to output through something like S-video and you're actually using component or vice-versa.
