Do SATA DVD-ROM's rip faster than IDE DVD-ROM's? I setup a new computer with a Liteon SATA DVD-ROM and seems no faster than an IDE DVD-ROM.

  2. The max speeds for both PATA and SATA interfaces are way over the max speed of any DVD-ROM drive.

  3. Makes no difference if the drive is "riplocked"; they slow down to 6x max for video "to keep the noise down".

  4. It makes little difference period. The fastest DVD ROM drives are, what 16x? The fastest DVD burners are 18x. That's in the 20 to 24 MB/sec range. ATA100 is 100 MB/sec, ATA133 is 133 MB/sec. SATA is 150 and 300 MB/sec. In all cases the limiting speed will be the drive itself, not the interface.

The biggest reason that SATA DVD ROM drives and burners are being released is that the IDE interface is being phased out by the computer manufacturers. For example, in many Dell Computer systems there is no IDE interface. The system manufacturers apparently want to see IDE go away. Because of this, the drive manufactures have to follow suit or they lose major market segments.

Additionally most people will not see any difference between sata i and sata ii (with present hard drives).. (triple chex speling) :P

The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.
