  1. We have two systems, a 975XBX with dual-core Conroe, and a IBM T43 notebook PC. On the Conroe system, using Windows Media Encoder, we're trying to convert an MPEG2 file to WMV. The video converts fine on any profile I choose, but there's no audio. If I take the same file and move it to the T43, and use the same profile in WME, the conversion works fine and the audio is present.

Any suggestions on what the problem is with the Conroe system? I've poked at everything I could think of in the mixer. Note that on the Conroe system, the MPEG2 file plays back in WMP10 with audio just fine.

It depends on what video and audio splitter and codec you have installed. What mpeg2 decoder do you have installed in both systems? You can identify with Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=DE1491AC-0AB6-4990-943D-627E6...displaylang=en . But it could also be the mpeg2 splitter...or audio decoder...

I would use something else for mpeg2 to wmv encoding like using dgindex, avisynth together with wmnicenc.

  3. Thanks for the reply. The T43 has InterVideo, the Conroe has Nero. Both also have MainConcept, but it's not the preferred decoder. Tried switching the Conroe to MainConcept, no improvement. I will also try the alternative conversion tools you recommended.
