I just heard about this guy today on the radio on the way home. AWESOME MUSIC!!
They played "always with me, always with you" on the radio and it rocks! I love that guitar player. It is everything I love about rock music. The electric guitar is perfect. At least in this track it edges on to heavy metal but stays in the synth/pop/rock level without going into Metallica style distortion. This has clean guitar rythyms.
If you've never heard it you should check it out. I may just go and by the whole album. I'm buying the single song on yahoo music right now. This song is from 1987.
OH AND NO LYRICS - At least in this song. I don't know if all of his music is no lyrics but this rocks!!

Nope - 93.9 the river - a windsor canada station we pick up here in southeastern Michigan.
Plays a lot of new stuff but some classic rock as well.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
We got a river station in Alanta too, It plays a pretty wide mix of stuff. 80% crap, 10% fair, 7% good and 3% great just like real life.
The Atlanta area stations have just gone through a big restructuring shake up in the past 6 months to a year and have not really settled down to a point were they are stable yet. We did however finally get rid of alot of the "Shock Jocks" and Idiots that could spend the whole morning laughing at a fart joke. The bad side to that is now all of the stations are trying to win the audience with the call in Testimonials from new listeners. It ain't no fun listening to some redneck go on and on about how great the new radio station is and associating bands with the wrong era. When are they gonna learn that music radio needs music, that's all!IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -
We have a pretty decent station here that plays mostly classic rock... some of it is a little too classic and off the wall for my tastes but you also hear a lot of good songs that don't get much air play. It was great when they first switched over cause they had no Jockies.... I wonder why there isn't a lot of stations that followed a format like that? I know it would be my choice as long as the music was to my liking.
They do a lot of local stuff during prime time which is one thing no radio station in this area does, pretty cool when your cruising down the road and here a song from your buddies.
Some of it so off the wall they even have a now playing list: http://www.102themountain.com/nowplaying.asp -
I actually started a thread a few months ago regarding Satriani. Should check it out.
This guy is a champ. Check out his solo stuff and as well, the live performances called G3. They are concerts with 3 guitarists. Usually Satriani, Steve Vai (a former student of his), and the 4rd alternates. Usually they are pretty good. Some past ones were Eric Johnson (probably one of the best guitarists I personally have ever heard .. bluesy style). John Petrucci from dream theatre. VERY technical and it sounds that way. They also toured with Malmstein but it was my ass. He is such a dunce. Amazing technical guitarist but there is just no flow, no emotion, no nothing. Just play a bunch of technically related notes as fast as you can and thrust your pelvis out repeatedly cause somehow that makes the notes sound cooler. Ugh.
Back to Satch ... he is definately very influencial in the guitar field. He range is from slow emotional stuff like "always with me, always with you" but like you said, can metal it up with stuff like "Satch Boogie."
Check out the stuff I mentioned and let me know what you think.

I think that I was actually working downtown the day of the raid, anti climatic as I recall.

He even attempts to sing from time to time .. not very well .. but he tries lol
Check out Big Bad Moon. Some singing and really good riff if you like that sort of thing. -
"Surfing With The Alien" as some other pretty decent tracks on it. The title track is quite good, but the best, in my opinion, is "Satch Boogie".
While I dig Satriani (who, by the way, instructed Kirk Hammett, taught Steve Vai from the beginning, David Bryson of Counting Crows, Charlie Hunter of Jazz fame, and Larry LaLonde of Primus.) I'm not overly impressed with his rhythm guitar. Most of it is just Joe, chunking along on palm-muted power chords. Steve Vai has some very interesting rhythms (check out "Bad Horsie" on the "Alien Love Secrets" EP or "The Audience Is Listening" on "Passion And Warfare".) The thing that makes these guys stand out amongst other "guitar heroes" is their musical sensibilities. While their music is technical (especially Vai), they still maintain a very melodic sound. Meanwhile, shred masters like Yngwie Malmsteen and John Petrucci (of Dream Theater) seem to have a "more is better" approach to play. They seem to try and cram as many notes as possible into one measure of music. While that is appealing from a technical aspect, it becomes old sauce very quick.
Sorry... I'm rambling.
Yoda, if you are interested in great guitar players, check out works by the following:
Eric Johnson
Lanny Cordola
Nuno Bettencourt (formerly of Extreme)
Yngwie Malmsteen (worth checking out)
Jeff Beck
Gary Hoey
Eddie Van Halen (While most famous for his leads, probably one of the most inventive rhythm guitarists alive.)
Dimebag Darrell (Pantera, Damage Plan - this may be a bit too much for you.) -
I would have to agree with pretty much everything smearbrick said.
Although, while I do find some of Satriani's rhythm stuff to be chunky, I do also find some of it to be pretty good. For example, Summer Song. I have always like that song and when it first came out, I tried to master playing it. I got pretty far into it. It was mostly the outro solo's that I couldnt get. My fingers just cant move that fast. I even picked up my guitar again for the first time in months and tried to play it. Still the same .. hard but easy at the same time.
The list of guitarists that smear wrote down is a REALLY good list as well. A few others that are worth noting:
Gary Moore
Mark Knofler (Dire Straits .. very under rated)
Zakk Wylde (formerly of Ozzy, now with Black Label Society)
David Gilmore (Pink Floyd . not the most technical guitarist out there, but definately one for "feeling it")
Ricky Scaggs (yes, I know. But his bluegrass stuff is unreal) -
