Hey all. My default video player( for playing back avi files) is Zoom player. I notice recently that when I click on an avi file to playback, zoom player would load up but the box would be blank...nothing is happening. I would then right click and open the file with VLC player which then it would playback fine. I figure it was a problem with Zoom player so I tried tinkering with the settings, uninstalling and reinstalling but still had the same problem.
Now this is where it gets a little frustrating. At that point I just made VLC my default video player since it had no problem playing the avi file. Now when I click on the avi VLC would load up, but again nothing is happening! Now I'm having the exact same problem with VLC. It seems that when I make either VLC or Zoom player the default player, they won't play back the file. Only when I make them the secondary player thats when they would work.
Hope I was clear. Maybe some one has encountered this problem before, I don't know. I just can't figure out how to fix it.

Sounds like an overlay problem. Thinking back, have you updated video drivers recently ?
Try turning off hardware acceleration temporarily to see if that fixes things, then turning it back on again. (Right-click on the desktop and select Properties. Click on the Settings tab, then Advanced Settings, then Troubleshoot. Drop the hardware acceleration slider back to 0)Read my blog here.
