    I have a Sony DCR-TRV11. I was attempting to convert old analog VCR tapes to iMovie digital clips by using the digital pass through feature of the camera.

    ie. VCR --> DCR-TRV11-->G4

    It worked for about 10 seconds but frame dropped like crazy, then after that attempt, my DV port doesn't seem to be able to send video to my Mac any longer.

    It is sending something because while in iMovie when I turn on the DV Camcorder it freezes my MAC. As soon as I turn the camera off, the computer is free again and all buffered key or mouse click actions catch up.

    Does anyone know what happened or how to fix it ?

  2. I have never been able to make a direct transfer through my camera. I always have to record to the camera and then import into iMovie. With my camera a sony as well the connections cancel each out. Let me know if you get a direct flow.

    I found out the answer to my own question but I thought that I would post the answer anyway so that it will help someone else.

    Sony camcorder failure A reader reports having two Sony camcorders that suddenly failed to be recognized by the Mac when connected via the FireWire port (they had worked previously). In fact, as soon as they were connected, the Mac would freeze. She sent them to Sony for repair and received the following reply:

    "Apparently some Macintosh computers have a fault where they put B+ on the data line, which blows up the DV interface IC on the camera! Has to be that, as two boards in a row with the identical fault seems impossible."

    There have been similar reports where the FireWire port on the Mac end gets "blown out" after connecting or disconnecting a device. However, we are not aware of any confirmation from Apple of a problem here.
