  1. Using Nero Burining ROM 6.

I burned a mpeg video as a Video CD for my wife and now everything burns slow.

When I make DVDs, what used to take 10 minutes or less with 8x DVD Rs not takes 30 minutes or more.

The burn page on Nero Burning ROM indicates it is burning at 8x but the burn times are too long for that.

What got changed and how do I change it back?

  2. Check your hard drive/CD drive DMA settings...

Open device manager and expand "IDE controllers"

Right click Primary Channel > Properties > Advanced Settings then set all transfer modes to "DMA if Available"

    Repeat for second IDE channel.

You might have to unload the IDE drivers as well in order to get DMA back.

Of course another possibility is your drive is dying.

For the first IDE channel it was already DMA if Available and showed that as the current transfer mode.

However, on the second IDE channel I selected "DMA if Available" but it is still showing PIO as the "current transfer mode."

How do I get that changed?

Uninstall the IDE/ATA channel that has reverted to PIO, then reboot. This won't cause any data loss. The Uninstall command should show when you right click on the ATA channel in Device Manager. When the computer reboots, you should see the channel in DMA mode. If not, you will have do do some registry changes.

    That got it.

Good lord it might even be faster than it was before.

Thank you guys very much. I would have never figured that one out.

What is the difference between PIO and DMA mode?

I burned a couple DVDs when it was in PIO. Other than taking longer is there any quality difference? Should I reburn them now that I am back in DMA mode?

PIO is just very slow and uses a lot of CPU resources. But it should still burn with the same quality as DMA. Just for your information, Windows will automatically revert a ATA channel to PIO when the drive has 6 consecutive read failures. It's a questionable Windows 'feature' to allow the drive to keep functioning.

Unfortunately, it won't reset automatically or let you know that it is in PIO mode. Just be aware if you have a lot of problems reading a disc and then your drive slows down, you need to check to see if it's reverted to PIO mode. Most DVD burners and DVD ROMs should be DMA 2-4. ROMS are usually DMA 2. Hard drives are usually DMA 4 -6. You should have no drives on your computer in PIO mode.

If you can't reset it with a reinstall of the channel, then you would need to make some registry changes. This involves some risk, so not something you want to do unless necessary.

Actually after you reboot you have to select it.

Probably depends on the motherboard and ATA controllers. Mine have always reset to DMA on their own as 'Auto Detection' is the default. But, if not, try to change them before resorting to the registry changes.
