    Hi,
I encode my DVD's with the xvid version that comes with gknot codec pack 1.9. My question is that if I turn the VHQ mode to 4 in the 1st pass and to 1 or 2 in the 2nd pass, will it still increase the quality of my encodes, see what I usually do is keep the same VHQ 4 setting for both passes, on my machine I have noticed that the results are always better in this case, but sometimes I just can't wait 4 to 6 hours for the encodes to finish in VHQ4 mode and I was wondering if I could somehow increase the encode speed while not losing too much quality by specifying different VHQ modes for the passes. I hope I don't sound too confusing, I'm still a bit green with xvid.

    Thank you

    Quality takes time.

if you really want to speed up your encoding, buy a new computer. 1.6 gHz and 256 MB of ram is very low spec nowadays. Replace your CPU with a core 2 duo (and motherboard and memory) and up your memory to 1GB, and you will see some marked speed increases.

If you stay on your current hardware then you can only make very small speed improvements unless you are willing to sacrifice quality.

  3. During the first pass of an multipass encode the encoder is examining the video to determine how much bitrate each frame requires. If you change the VHQ setting the data collected during the first pass will not accurately reflect the requirements of later passes. You will get inferior results and inaccurate file sizes.

If you don't need files of a specific size just switch to single pass target quantizer encoding. The encoder will use whatever bitrate is necessary at each frame in order to deliver the quality you asked for. The file will turn out with exactly the quality you requested and the size will will be whatever size is needed for that quality.

VHQ1 for the first and 4 for the second should be fine (not even sure VHQ is used for the first pass).

see, guns1inger, I know I've got low sys specs and I'm cool with the slow speeds, its just that you know, sometimes you have to give your friend a rip and you can't wait that long, I do understand that their are no shortcuts to quality,my question's answered, mods may kindly close the thread if they want to.
