Having problems getting this dvd burner to burn faster than 2x, and i'm using various
16X media. It burns CD media at speeds up to 24X, but the dvd burning is extremely
slow, and is rated at 8X speed.

I've checked the primary and secondary IDE channels, and they show the following:

    PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL
Device 0 - Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5

Device 1 - transfer mode: DMA if available
    Current Transfer mode: Not applicable

    SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL
Device 0 - Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2

Device 1 - transfer mode: DMA if available
    Current Transfer mode: Not applicable

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks,

    Win

Well, i actually tried it before i realized the numbers were different.
It gives me the following error:

Target NEC ND-3570a is not found correctly.

So this leads me to believe its NOT the same, as its looking on my
    system for the other drive.

    Sorry for the confusion.

yeah, silly me. I just found the link you provided, and it seems like i need to hook this laptop drive up to a disktop machine to flash the firmware. So this will take some time while i get te correct cables ,etc.

Yes, it is, but i see the following under the firmwares listed...

    * It it highly recommended to use a slimline to IDE adapter and a desktop PC for this procedure instead of leaving the drive in your notebook. You might be unable to complete this procedure if the drive is still installed in your laptop. The drive has to be attached to the secondary IDE channel, you will probably get an error message on the primary channel.
    * Boot into plain DOS. A command prompt from within Windows does NOT work.
    * Execute the file 6750BTR.BAT
    * Reboot your PC. The drive should now be recognized as a slave device
    * Execute the file NECND6750_v2P1.EXE from within Windows now to flash the main firmware

I've flashed firmwares with regular dvd units before, but never a laptop drive. Do i need to take the unit out as they say?

also, i cant tell which of these firmwares is best for my needs.
