    Hi
Im new here and just for the first time copied a family vhs tape onto DVD using a samgsung vr336 video recorder and DVD-RW disc. It is finalised in vr mode. I want to edit some of the video on my PC but dont know what i need to do it and the PC wont recognise the VOB format. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Try again using video mode and not VR mode. Standard video mode will create a disc that meets dvd specs (using video_ts folder and vob files) that can be read by other players and your pc.

To get the video off the disk try VOB2MPG which will take the data from the VOBs on the DVD and create an MPEG file on the HD.

As far as I can tell there is no conversion done it simply makes the files pc readable (most likely it'll still be in MPEG2 format).

To edit - depending on what you want to do - have a look am MPEG-VCR by Womble. It will let you cut bits out (like adverts) and create a new file of just the bits you want to keep. It will also convert the audio from AC3 to MP2 if required.

The problem is his pc can't read/doesn't recognize the dvd. This is because it was recorded using VR mode which doesn't use vob files.

copy a vob to the hard drive, rename to change the ext to mpeg

now almost any program that edits mpegs can open it

'movie maker' comes with windows, it is already on your winXp pc

    it's slow but it works,

you can also download a free 30 day fully functional ( not crippled ) version of 'movie maker 5' from ulead ( im testing it now ) I think MF4 is faster

MF5 will scan the disk and give a title and the number of chapters and you can import to the program and edit, then export mpeg files to authored as new dvd

using software like vob2meg is handy because it will cleanup little non-compliant glitches that renaming the file can't do
