Capturing not possible b/c my computer has too much crap on it?

Hi

I have been trying unsuccessfully for months to capture video with my computer (Celeron2.8GHz, 512ram, 256mb GeForce GPU). I have bought two different PCI capture cards, and two different USB capture devices. In all cases, I successfully install the hardware/software, only to find when I run the capture program that its not reading in anything from the capture device. My most recent attempt is with a Adaptec GameBridge AVC-1400.

I also have a laptop, which is significantly less "beefy" than my PC. I tried installing the Gamebridge, and imagine my surprise when it worked fine on the laptop (albeit a little choppy due to lack of processor power).

So that means there is something wrong with my PC. Like I said, the hardware always installs with no problem, which is making me think there may be some sort of software conflict. I downloaded a few free codec-info tools, and they tell me that I have scads of codecs on my system, most of which I probably don't need. The only codecs I personally installed were ffdshow and Ogg-vorbis. The rest have been installed (I'm guessing) by third party apps (Ulead, Nero, etc). I tried uninstalling as many of these codecs using the windows add/remove thingy, but the gamebridge still didn't work, and whats worse, I had no audio/video capabilities on my PC at all. I reverted to a restore point to get that stuff back, but now I am back at square one. Also I have tried dScaler, but its very complicated in its menus, and there is usually one thing or other that doesn't work. Plus, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to just use the (much simpler) software that comes with the gamebridge - on my laptop I was installed and recording in about 5 minutes.

Anyone have any ideas? Can codecs conflict and prevent me from capturing? Is there a safe and easy way to "reset" my codecs to windows default? I've heard of Codec Sniper, but it doesn't give enough information to know if what I'm 'sniping' is required or not.

Does your computer have USB2 ports? The gamebridge device requires USB2, any other USB device worth anything would also be USB2.

As far as software generally the best software to capture with is whatever came with the device. I'd get it working with that before attempting to use anything else. Make sure to download the "latest and greatest" from the manufacturers website. The software shipped with devices is usually out of date.

I agree that the software that comes with it is probably the best for it, and thats what I'm trying to use. Like I said, the software works fine on my laptop, so it appears it is the "latest and greatest" (or at least functional).

Well I tried DScaler, and it doesn't see any video. I got an error (Class not found) when I tried to select the Gamebridge.

I ran the Sherlock codec tool to see what wason my computer, here are the results. Can anyone see anything wrong?

What is the purpose of the VCR when you can just run the broadcast right to the device?

BTW the ADS DVD express would be quite simialar to the device he can't get to work.

The funny thing is, its the VCR I am actually trying to hook up. I've got a ton of old home videos on VHS that I would like to convert to a medium that isn't going to disintegrate in a couple more years. Also, I'd like to share the videos with family members overseas. Last time I checked, my email program wouldn't let me attach a VHS tape to outgoing messages (I guess it bungs up the "internet pipes", eh?.

Seems like you have already spent a good deal of money, but a SIMPLE solution to start with would have been a Datavideo or Canopus ADVC device for about $300. They have their own hardware codec, so no problems there, you can capture with FREE programs, & they are dead reliable. I have done 100's of vids over 2 years with my ADVC100.

No driver conflicts, does not drop frames or lose audio sync, just make sure you have a 7200 rpm HD & a big one, b/c it captures at 13GB/hour in AVI.

Maybe this is too late for you, but perhaps a newbie will read this and investigate this further.
