I got my BenQ DW1655 DVD burner and lately I’m doing lot of reading about DL burning. Burnt a lot of single layer and never a DL disc.

Lots of threads advise to use DVD Decrypter for ISO reading and Imgburn for ISO writing for 1:1 copy. Seems very simple technique.

However, I came across the following threads with some very good information that contradicts the DVD Decrypter/Imgburn method

    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=225001

    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=286029

This is specifically quoted by Edmund Blackadder (in exact words):
“ if all you want is 1:1 DVD9 to DVD9 copies, then DVDDecrypter will do. …if you used let's say DVDShrink to add or remove some materials from the already authored DVD. If you add or remove even the slightes thing, you throw the whole balance out of the window and either need a quality DL burning software to fix it (RecordNow 7.3), or you have to re-author it in DVDLab Pro, DVDMaestro, etc., and take care of the layer break manually.”

Here is my question to all peoples burning DL disc:

When I use DVD Decrypter to read ISO file, I am removing IFO/VOB PUOs. If you read Edmund Blackadder statement, it says “If you add or remove even the slightes thing”. Removal IFO/VOB PUOs from the original disc is the “slightest thing” and therefore, I’m basically altering the content of the original disc.

Is this 1:1 copy or not? Am I disturbing the original layer break or not? For this method, can I use Imgburn to burn ISO file?

If the answer is “Yes”, then I will use CloneDVD/AnyDVD to create VIDEO_TS and burn with Roxio 7.5. If the answer is “No”, I can go ahead with DVD Decrypter / Imgburn way.

    Thanks in advance

    abeesmathi,

PUOs are controlled by bits in fixed length fields. When you're "removing" a PUO, you're just clearing the bit that controls that particular user operation. It doesn't change the size of the files at all, so the layer break isn't affected.

If you have AnyDVD/CloneDVD why are you messing with anything else? Why burn with crummy Roxio when CloneDVD will burn DL just fine? You can take out what you want, I don't worry about the layer break, just let the software do it's job, and I've never had a problem. Some people are sticklers about "preserving the original layer break", but I've never noticed a difference. I believe you can do it with IMGburn but you have to read one of the guides.

    abeesmathi,

I use for full DVD (1:1 copy) DVD Decrypter (read ISO), ImgBurn (write ISO). For Movie only DVD Shrink (Movie only, no compression, extract to folder as Files), ImgBurn (Build mode to ISO,write Iso and Pick % close to 50% as all LBA will be average on a movie only Rip)

Never had a problem using Verbatim DL printables on a Pioneer 111. However YMMV
