I've gotten away from this for a couple of years so Im trying to catch up on new information.

I wanted to create my own media server and thought I might be able to use the PS3 following this thread but it turned out too time consuming and had many limitations FAT 32 being one of them. http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/computers-htpc-media-servers/5363-ps3-video-ser...tup-tests.html

So I gave up. Thought the LG BD570 had some promise as a media server but it also doesnt work right.

So now I just want to backup my DVD movies onto my computer hard drive. From what I have read the ISO files used with the VLC player seem to work the best. So my question is what is the best software program to do this? The quickest most efficient?
I have been experimenting with DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Image Burn, DVD Fab etc but which of these would be the best to use for this? Is there a step by step procedure around that I could use?

Also do Blu-Ray discs follow the same procedure?

Im not looking to copy any of these to disc just put on my hard drive so I can watch anytime with VLC.

Use DVDFab Passkey (free while still in beta), let it run in the background, and make an ISO of the disk using ImgBurn. Or if you have AnyDVD, right click on the fox icon at the bottom right of the screen when running AnyDVD and use the built-in ripper to make the ISO.

    Those are simple to use.

Making an ISO of a Blu ray would work in a similar manner if you have the HD version of AnyDVD, though you'll have problems playing Blu ray with VLC. You'll need to mount the ISO in VirtualClone Drive and play the main movie m2ts file using VLC, and even then, I find Blu ray playback with VLC to be inferior to Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater Platinum. TMT will play the entire movie, menus and all, if you mount the ISO in VirtualClone Drive. The Arcsoft program is not cheap though.

Turning the Blu ray movie into an .mkv file might work better for you. Look into BluRip or MakeMKV.
