I have just tried a Dazzle USB DVD Recorder. The capturing speed is slower than it plays. As a result, it looks like playing a slow motion picture. Does anyone know a good portable USB DVD Recorder/device that can directly copy from a Mini DV, VHS or even a DVD player to a DVD disc with the USB link to a computer? Thank you for your answer.

yes, check out the various 'ADS tech' hardware
I have the dvdExpress, about 2yrs old, it does not do mpeg4, it does do mpeg-1, mpeg-2, dvds and svcd
it's 'realtime' capture but can capture from any AV input signal, you set the capture quaility & mode before starting the record session,
you can record as mpeg-2 on the HD for editing ( at DVD quality ) or record directly to dvd,
I did all mine from VHS to HD then edited it, the quality is great, there is NO degradtion that I can see, if you have good video input source, you will get good video recorded
they have newer versions, including one that records in MPEG-4
I think the model number for this one is USBAV-701
heres a link to a PDF with a picture and some info about this device
http://www.adstech.com/products/USBAV_701/Pdf/USBAV-701.pdf?pid=USBAV701
do a right click save as and then open with adobe reader -
Well ... you should fill in your pc specs .
Usb2 capture devices require atleast a minimum cpu speed of 2000mhz , and sp2 for xp , to even record at anywhere near the highest quality .
Your's require's : Intel® Pentium® or AMD® Athlon® 2.0 GHz or higher (2.4 GHz or higher recommended) .
The slow playback during capture is caused by the software and directx9 , provided the pc meet's or exceed's the minimum spec's for the device used .
Some software display's only x frame's , while other's show all frame's during the recording process .
Nero record = x frame's .
Ulead video studio = all frame's .
Neodvd (avermedia) = all frame's .

This depend's if they avoid macrovision or not .
If not , then no , not suitable at all .
My avertv usb2 (no longer manufactured) , and dvd ezygold pci (still available , supported under linux , 98SE/Me/2000/XP) ignore's this problem .
As for dvd ... just rip them .

Recording via usb2 directly to dvd disc is not a good choice ... one sneeze and it's stuffed and you have to start all over again ... should be avoided at all cost's as this can cause hardware problem's to develope , and from then on , the quality gose south .
Damage to onboard usb2 chipset ... even though modern system will reset the overload ... it will never be the same (replace motherboard) .

theewizard seemed to get a little carried away with their answer to the post .
here's the link for avermedia device's ... http://www.aver.com/products/
They use their own standards ... check out the tv tuner's & pvr's (vista 64 ready) ... http://www.aver.com/products/tvtuner.shtml
For other's ... http://www.aver.com/products/dvm.shtml .

It would be worth checking out the difference between realtime hardware based recording device's ... while the price is higher ... it dose mean a lower spec'd pc can be used and receive the same output quality as the card's do all the work ... not the pc .
