what editing sofware should i use ?

Hi all . i am new to video edding. I have pinnacle studio 10 plus but i don't know if that is good editor to create good effects such as rotating cube with video playing on each side. I tought about getting adobe premiere but i found out that it does not support mpeg2 format!!! most of video that i work with are mpeg2 captured files. could any one tell give a help and suggestion of making a good decision. My main goal is to be able to make good effects for my video such as 3d cube and video playing on each side.Thanks

A 3-D animator would be more likely to do that well than an editor, at least if you want it to look pretty good. Good 3-D effects require that your graphics card be utilized for shading, lighting etc and very few video editors do that by themselves... Try Ulead 3-D cool production, it even has a preset specifically for the rotating cube you mentioned.

As far as MPEG files all the Ulead products work well with them, other than that look into some of the MPEG editors like Womble and Cutterman.

Blender can do this ... with raw avi ... but you would want something "easier" ...

I don't think any of the 3-D animators fall under the category easy, especialy if you're new and don't understand using keyframes, grouping objects...etc.

Premiere Pro supports native HDV editing - which is MPEG2.

Premiere Pro like most other editors "handles" MPeg2 just fine. It just decodes MPeg2 to native RGB or YUV thus loosing a generation. The advantage is you can do almost anything to the video while uncompressed before you re-encode.

"Native" MPeg2 editors maintain original MPeg2 GOPs except where changes occur. In the most simple form, this is cuts editing to a frame within a GOP or adding transitions against one or more GOPs. Thus all frames except those close to the transition are first generation. See Womble products for this type of editor.

If you want the best of both worlds, Mainconcept makes a plug-in video path for Premiere Pro (or Premiere Elements) that allows a virtual native MPeg2 video path. When this is used, all Premiere Pro effects and filters can be applied (requiring decode) but unchanged frames are kept first generation MPeg2. Other programs cause all frames to drop a generation whether processed or not.

Many editors have added processing paths for HDV or "DVD" MPeg or "hard disc" MPeg camcorders. The strategies used vary but seldom maintain first generation frames. Dig deeper if you want to understand what each is doing to your video.
