After having 1/4 of my collection go down the drain because of Ritek media I decided to spring for some TY media, TYG02, and a new burner, Pioneer 111D. I burned a movie to the TY media at 4x, just to test it as I was planning on using it only for DL media, and was shocked to get a coaster! It verified just fine, but after that it treated the dvd as a blank dvd-rw, even dvdinfo reported it as TYG02/DVD-RW/BLANK. So I pull it out and into my NEC-3550a and it doesn't even acknowledge there is a disc in the drive, wtf?! I put the dvd into a player and it played just fine. I burned the same movie again at 4x with a TY but using the NEC and it verified but after that it would not read the dvd. I put the dvd in the new Pioneer and no problem, dvdinfo shows it as VIDEO/DVD-R. Seems as though since I installed the Pioneer things are not agreeing with each other....any suggestions?

are you sure you have genuine TY media? did you order them from rima.com? there are fake TY media on the market. why are you burning at 4x spd? the PIONEER 111D is a 8-16x spd burner. what's the firmware on the drive? what software are you using to convert the dvd movies?

I also commonly burn 8x media at 4x and 16x media at 6x (with 6x being the MAX rate I prefer to burn at). Nothing wrong with that at all!
However this is a rather bizarre situation that you have here!
I don't recall ever reading such a thing myself and I've been around the block a time or two now with DVD Video burning.
You might want to poke around at the CDFREAKS website where they have some excellent forums especially when it comes to hardware issues with CD/DVD burners and firmware issues.
Some thoughts that come to mind though are ...
1.) Are you sure you have real "top quality" Taiyo Yuden DVD media? As mentioned there are some fake TY media on the market. There is also a "form" of TY media on the market that is sub-standard and not the normal "top quality" form you expect when bought from a place such as RIMA.COM
2.) Are you using the original firmware or did you upgrade the firmware? If you upgraded the firmware did you upgrade correctly and to a "proper" firmware version?
Good Luck !!!

The media was purchased from www.memoryexpress.com, they are local for me. Firmware is stock on the Pioneer and the NEC was updated months and months ago. Oddly enough, both dvds read good with proper stats in the Pioneer now, so they aren't coasters after all. However the NEC is not even a year old yet, it will verify after a burn but thats it as far as reading is concerned. Here is what I get in dvdinfo with both of these dvds in the NEC, one burned with the NEC and the other Pioneer, both TYG02.
