"good in quality" and "small file size" doesn't go hand in hand, but as both are highly subjective, can you quantify?
As for speed, it's to the largest degree determined by your CPU.

  3. Hi,

Let's say for quality a good resolution for full screen size and for speed a pc configuration with:

    - intel pentium 4 2.8ghz
    - 512mb ram
    - sata-1 100gb with 16mb cache

Square pixel equivalent of your original DVD and around 1.6 - 2 GB in size would approximate the original quality if encoded properly. Speed would be into the 4 - 8 hour range for a multi-pass encode to Divx/Xvid on your system. Anything smaller will likely produce obvious artifacts. H264 is better quality in smaller size, but will take 2 - 3 times as long to encode.

Only you can be the judge. Make some tests with different quality settings, (=different file sizes) to find what's an acceptable compromize to you. A compromize it will be, as it will never look as good as the original DVD, but may be 1/4 -1/2 the size with decent quality.
You can expect about real time encoding time at best (1 hour DVD to DivX/XviD=1 hour conversion time, give or take 100% )
