I am looking to buy a new burner, PIONEER DVR-111D OR SAMSUNG SH-S182M.
I am leaning towards the Pioneer, hopfully this would be a good choice. (any comments on this would be appreciated)
In reviewing these units both note that a 80 pin IDE might be needed.
Would I have trouble using either unit with a 40 pin IDE?
My Pentium 4 computer is at least 5 years old, I am not even sure if my computer can use 80 pins!

Yes your computer can use 80 wire ide cables which are fine with your P4 computer. It's best to use a flat ribbon 80 wire ide cable. With the PIONEER 111D drive if you want bitsetting to dvdrom for SINGLE LAYER DVD+R media then you'll have to use "THE DANGEROUS BROTHERS" hacked firmware. Do a search in here regarding the TDB hack or check out the PIONEER FORUM at CdFreaks.com. You'll also find a SAMSUNG FORUM there as well.

Wiil these DVD recorder devices work with the old 40 pin cables? If so, what limitation would there be?
How much does the 80 conductor type typically cost and where would you buy it? -
Make sure you read the hardware requirements... I have been seeing DVD burners marked for at least a P4 1.8 Ghz, since P4s started out at 1.3 Ghz....
I'd use a 80 wire forty pin IDE cable. It will allow the drive to use the proper DMA settings. a 40 wire 40 pin cable may be to slow for the fast drives.
When I install the new drives for customers I always change to a 80 wire cable.
You can buy 80 wire 40 pin cables at computer stores, places such as Best Buy and of course the internet.
Can't speak to the Pioneer 111, I had a 109 and was somewhat disappointed with it. The LiteOn 16X models I replaced it with and used in another computer are much less finicky for media. I never got really good +R DL burns with the pioneer not to mention coasters. Using up the rest of the spindle in the LiteOn and they all burned and worked... YMMV -
I have Pentium IV 2.4, I assume that shoudl be adequate for these type of drives?
Also, approximately, how much does this 80 IDE cable go for? -
There is no "80 pin IDE cable", all IDE cables are 40 pin. There are 80 conductor/40 pin cables that interchange with all ordinary 40 pin cables. The 80 conductor cables have an extra 40 wires that act as a shield for better data integrity and faster speeds. As far as I know they are the same price a older 40 conductor cables. Almost any new IDE cable you find nowadays ia an 80 conductor cable anyway. I never pay more than a buck a piece for cables.

Excelsior123: If you use your old 40 wire ide cable the drive may not function correctly with the PIONEER 111D drive. You could try using it and see if the drive is in UDMA 4 MODE, if it is then you're ok with using that old 40 wire ide cable. If it's in UDMA 2 MODE the drive may not burn at the correct speeds or work correctly at all which is what I've experienced. Use the Flat ribbon 80 wire ide cables instead of the rounded one if possible. You can get the flat ribbon 80 wire ide cables from online retailers or any computer store/shop.
Here's a store that's located in San Francisco that sells flat ribbon 80 wire ide cables for $2.99 & $3.99. I bought a bunch of them when I was vacationing in S.F.
