I would use autoGK and I would use XviD instead of DivX ... both are MPEG-4 formats but XviD seems to have better quality than DivX although one could argue that the quality difference is not very dramatic.
Do you have a MPEG-4 capable DVD player? If so you need to know what chipset it uses. Most current models use a MediaTek chipset. In autoGK there is an option to make the output compatible with stand alone players and there are two options. For MediaTek you would pick the MTK/SIGMA option. If you have a ESS chipset (the old Philips DVP-642 for instance) you would pick that option.
A good cheap MPEG-4 capable DVD player would be the Philips DVP-5140 which can be bought from WALMART for all of $49 and change. This model uses a MediaTek chipset.

What bitrate for the video should be used with divx? What do most use?
I haven't bought a dvd player yet for divx. -

Depends on the source. Different movies compress differently. AutoGK runs a compression test to make sure that you get the right resolution and quality for the size you choose (in the default 2-pass mode, other settings on Auto). Or, if you want to be sure of a given quality for a given resolution, but don't much care about the resulting file size, use its 1-pass Target Quality Mode. The default 75% is very good, and it takes almost half the time. -
The bitrate you use depends on what size or quality you want on the finished Divx and the running time of the video. The Divx codec has a bitrate calculator built in or there are some in our tools section. I use about 900 for a CD type output and about 1500 if I want to put several videos on a DVD data disc. Much higher and you won't gain much quality, just size. But a calculator will tell you better. Try our VideoHelp Bitrate calculator.
The Divx codec uses both cores of a dual core machine quite well. It doesn't matter as much what program you use for the encoding as all the work is being done by the codec itself, not really the program. -
Is there a way to get rid of the divx logo? It's only shown for a few sec but it's annoying. I bought the software so i don't know why its beening shown.

Thanks for the help! -
Open your AVI in VDubMod. If you don't see the DivX logo, then it's being added by the player, and there will be a place to turn it off.
While you're in VDubMod, go Video->Compression, and look for DivX in the list of codecs there. You can do the same using the other DivX variants. -

Plenty of apps that call themselves divx converters but actually encode with Xvid or libavcodec.

DVDx isn't half bad and it's a simple 'all-in-one' approach.
