Is there any way to enable hardware deinterlacing during playback of AVIs? As an experiment I took a short clip of CSI:NY that was originally recorded in MPEG2 and converted it to AVI without deinterlacing (using XVID 1.1 encoder). No matter what I tried in MPC/WMP I could not get any hardware deinterlacing. MPEG4Modifier reports that "interlace=no" for some reason, even though the clip is interlaced.

YOu can use VLC Media Player, Video->Deinterlace to manually activate deinterlacing.

Yes, but AFAIK that would use VLC's software deinterlacing, right? Not the video card's hardware (ATI's AVIVO).

This is really just an experiment to see if it was possible (just in case I happen to download or have a need to create an interlaced AVI in the future). If I really want hardware deinterlacing I'll just leave the files as MPEG2. Does the AVI container format have some kind of interlace flag that can be set?

  4. If you resized it, unless you were real careful how you did it, nothing will be able to deinterlace it at this point, as you've already wrecked the field structure.

Did you set up XviD for interlaced encoding?

I didn't resize. I kept the file at 720x480 (from an NTSC TV capture) and used MPEG4Modifier to set the DAR to 4:3. As for the interlace option in XviD, I didn't see any, maybe I missed it. I'm using Koepi's 1.1 Beta 2 build.

EDIT: OK, I see the option now under the profile settings, I'll try it and report back.

EDIT 2: Yes! It works. If I set FFDShow to use libavcodec and hardware mode, I get hardware deinterlacing. However, if I use the XViD decoder, it tries to resize it first and the interlaced structure is destroyed. Of course, this method is dependent on FFDShow to set hardware mode. I don't know if it's possible without it.
