Re-installed both XviD and MPC but I get the "Cannot render the file" error message. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Check the files with gspot to ensure you have the exact codec used.

I do. And I tried ffdshow, too. No dice. Other codecs work fine, though.

Yup. Works fine. Any skin recommendations (possibly something close to the MPC/WMP6 interface)?

If VLC works, but no DirectShow based player, it's either down to a codec problem, or with the DirectShow base system.
First, I'd check problem codecs with Codec Sniper or equiv, removing error spots.
If necessary, get & install latest XviD codec build.
    Re-register quartz.dll

Codec Sniper showed no problems, so I re-registered Quartz.dll and that did the trick. Thanks!
