Hello, I am kind of new to creating dvd's - just got my first dvd burner. But my question is, is there a program that will allow me to author a dvd with multiple avi files, and have it adjust the encoded file sizes to fit on one dvd. For example, all the programs I have been testing will encode on 700mb avi file to a 3gb+ vob file. I would like to add 3 or 4 700mb avi's to one dvd. Also I would like it to have a decent encoder. Another question - I was thinking about it (havent tested yet - everything takes too mucg time) could i merge the four 700 mb avis into one file, then encode that to one vob, and just create 4 chapters at the beginning of each new video?

    Cheers!!

Try convertx2dvd. That said, don't try to squeeze more than 2-2.5 hours of video onto a DVD-5 - it won't look good. The file size in AVI format is irrelevant, when trying to judge how much will fit a DVD. Only play time (and to some extent what's in the movies - talking heads don't need much "room" - an action movie need lots) matters.

You cannot compare avi's (mpeg4) and DVDs (mpeg2) on size!
Forget about size - it is time that's relevant here! One hour in the best DVD quality takes up a full DVD-R/+R disc. I suggest that you use your application and transcode your avi's into DVD - then add them to DVDShrink and reduce the size to one disc. Remember: at best you can fit 2 hours video on a single disc, but try out with DVDShrink and judge the output of the quality ourself.

If you are just interested in watching the videos on a TV, then you need not do any conversion from avi (DivX or XviD) to DVD Video. As mentioned above, DivX or XviD is a highly compressed format for storing interleaved Video/Audio/Subs. Converting into DVD video is not going to improve the video quality but would only increase the file size by a factor of 3 to 4 times at least.

So your best option is to burn a number of avi's on a DVD-R in UDF-ISO mode. The disk would play fine on majorityof the DVD players available in the market (should be marked as capable of playing DivX or MPG4).

  6. NO! the real geek would go out and buy a Netfear av8000 media streamer. this allows you to stream (play) your avi files directly to your telly (from your PC hard drive) without the intermediate step of burning to a disc, let alone converting avi to dvd. Helios also makes a newt-workable DVd avi player. Even Apple TV does something similar with lots of restrictions (rotten to the core). See also Linksys KIss Rhapsody and (gfx crd with TV out)
