Hi all, can anyone help me out with some external enclosures? I recently came across a good deal on the sony dru-530a, I know it is older but for $6.00 brand new still in the box I can't complain (working in retail has its perks). I remember reading on the site about some external enclosures and I was wondering if someone can recommend a good one for me or for sony brand, or links to some information please. I know nothing about them, nor how they work so I was wondering if there is something in particular I should be looking for.

Check out the drive cases a little ways down this page:

    You'll need a 5.25 inch enclosure

Go with firewire if it's at all possible. It works better than USB2 for hard drives and optical drives. Buy a cheap FW card for your PC if it doesn't already have FW.

If that's not in the cards for you, then USB2 is what you'll have to use.

Wanted to ask another question about external enclosures but didn't want to start a new topic Would it be better to take out my slaved 40 gb maxtor (and enclose that) and run the dru-530a off the ide ribbon with the main 80 gb harddrive and then leave my dru-510a and dvd rom in the computer on the other ide ribbon?

Your hard drive would see more of an advantage from being internal than your burner. Since its throughput should be higher.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Instead of starting a new topic I thought I would post in this old one, does anyone rip a dvd from an external enclosure with a dvd rom? I was wondering how efficient it is or if there are problems doing it from enclosure? Some stuff came up and I never got the external enclosure due to computer problems (it took a dump) but I am now ready to get one (I know two years later). I only have one bay in my computer (it came with a dvd burner) and I wanted to take dvd rom out of junk computer enclose it and rip from it. Going to start searching for a black and silver one to match my case. I will get the firewire and usb one.

You can do everything from an external enclosure that you can do from an internal drive. Sometimes the external drive may not run as fast as an internal drive. Also, I have found best success doing my rips, copies, etc from a dedicated internal ROM drive and not a R/RW drive.

Dr Dos, thanks for the reply. The burner that is in the computer is locked at 2.0 rip speed and takes like 45 minutes to rip. I am at work and I can't remember the burner, I know it is a Sony DW-U14a ( something like that, i know it ends in 14a not sure of first letters). So I thought I would get the external and put in my old dvd-rom. So let me ask, would I be better off to put the rom in computer and burner in external case?

50/50 really .... If it were my system I would put the ROM inside the the RW drive in the enclosure.

Maybe others have better suggestions based on past experience.
