I have a new DVD recorder (LG) with DV Input.
I connect my computer to the DVD with FireWire.
Now I want to record the timeline from premiere directly to my DVD.

Is it possible? or the input DV IN, in the DVD it just for DV cameras?

    Thanks for help.

Set your input to DV then in premiere you can use file>export to tape. Press record on the dvd recorder.

Not sure about LG but Panasonic DVD Recorders will not let you do this. They accept DV input over the firewire connection ONLY from camcorders. They impose this limit by using AV/C commands over the bus, and unless you have a 1394 driver stack with appropriate drivers on your PC the recorder will simply say "No device found."

If LG is different then you might be OK.

Someone should writer a DV camcorder emulation application that would play a file from camcorder transport commands.

I have JVC DR-M10 DVD recorder and I can record directly from Vegas timeline to JVC. Works like a charm, saves a lot of time.

JVC is higher end I think. At any rate there is/was a Mac application that emulated a digital VCR on the bus and supposedly that worked. For Windows XP I started playing around with a few things but firewire (IEEE 1394), which is supposed to be "easy", is incredibly hard to do right. There have been issues in the past with MS drivers. Long threads over at AVS Forums from 3 and 4 years ago, so maybe the driver situation is a little better today. Another obstacle is the specs. The key spec here is IEC 61883, which defines the protocol and commands for AV/C. It is impossible to find on the net. You have to pay for it and it's not cheap. All camcorders follow parts of that spec.

My PC "sees" the Panny when I plug in the firewire cable, but little else. Even rigging up a very simple driver to sniff the commands coming from the recorder is not an easy thing to do.

Yes, you can for the most part. In fact I bought my DVDR primarily to xfer and archive my old VHS and 8mm tapes. I plan to do that through a camcorder (passthru) if the DVDR doesn't stabilize the image enough using composite I/O. I think rendering from Premiere, etc., out to composite (or component or S-Video) --> camcorder and then via firewire to the DVDR should work but it's kludgy.

Thanks all, I try and try all day but I don't think it possible.
I asked someone and he say that the DVD can record only from camcorders or DVCAM from the DV input, but don't from the computer. I don't know why, Maybe in the new DVD models it be possible.

They will let you record from a computer if they want to let you record from a computer. You as user have these choices.

    1. Read reviews to find out if your desired mode is supported.

    2. Look for software utilities that do what you want.

    3. Write your own DV camcorder emulator.

WinDV does not work sending DV out over 1394 to Panasonic DVDRs. It does not emulate a 1394 device on the bus adhering to the AV/C protocol and so the Panny ignores it. A shame the author hasn't done anything with it in 3 years. The source code would be nice to look at.

Do you really need to go EXTERNAL? don't you have a DVD burner on your rig you can record to?

I think the idea is to save time when you're transcoding from another format to DVD compliant MPEG2. Why pay for a slow software encoding codec (TMPGEnc CCE, Mainconcept, etc.) when you can let the DVDR do all the work for you in hardware? That's my interest. If you encode a lot of video it's a real time saver.

Try it and see. Two methods.
    1. "play timeline to video on Premiere" + Push record on DVD recorder

    If that doesn't work
    2. Export timeline to a DV-AVI file. Then see if WinDV works for "Recording to a DV device"
