    Happy New Years folks;
    First question Can downloaded AVI files using AC2 audio be converted to AC5.1 DVDs ? I have been playing around with the actual conversion of video and audio files for a least 2 years now, but I have never tried this or even researched doing this yet

    If your question is can 2 channel AC3 audio be restored to 5.1 channel AC3, the answer is no.

    If your question is can I make pseudo-5.1 mix from a 2 channel AC3 (or even mp3) audio, the answer is a qualified yes. You cannot re-create the original 5.1 mix. The data required is gone for good. There are tools that will allow you to create surrounds and LFE data from 2 channel source through the use of processing tricks. The question you need to ask yourself is - is the effort worth it if I have a Dolby ProLogic 2 amplifier that can do a better job on-the-fly ?
