I've been using MeGUI to convert my dvds to .264 MP4 files to play on my xbox 360. I've been using the PD-PS3-XBOX360 configuration, but setting the bitrate to 2048. I accidentally encoded a dvd with the the default setting (1000) instead of what I've been using and the .264 portion is file is probably half the size of what I normally would had done. The quality isn't as good as 2048, but it's fairly close.

My question is, what would be an optimal bitrate to use to keep the same quality dvd quality? I don't want to create a larger file than necessary if I can keep the same quality. I'd throw the files on an 360 to test out to see if I can notice any difference, but I don't have a 360 to test it on atm.

There is no optimal. Just like any other encoding it is source dependent. Noisy source or source with a lot of action or source that is mostly dark will require a higher bitrate than talking head material. If you want to maintain the quality then use Constant Quality encoding and take whatever file size you end up with.
