I have a new Philips 642/37 Nov 2006 and I have found it won't play many DVD's that played on all earlier models. This is not related to region setting What have the done to this once great player? Is there any solution?

It seems that are issues reported on the new 642's. Try this thread instead https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=317193&highlight=dvp642+firmware

I would suspect they're using a cheaper DVD loader than the original production. I own a very early production model(no macrovision) and it's still going strong.

  6. Why buy one of them? new models are 5960, 5940.

Maybe they have a firmware update for you?

I got one of the good ones. Mine's 2 years old and still going strong. However, I have read of so many people who have problems with this model that I can't recommend it without reservations and warnings. It might be nice for you to specify what DVDs won't play. Commercial ones? If so, which ones? Burnable DVDs? Issues with raw media files on DVD-ROM?

I simply get "no disc " text messagewhen I try to play any DVD that plays in any same model manufactured before Nov2006. The older models played almost anything including any videos burned fast and simplyas dvd data files using Nero. I tried to see if I could lookup firmware version but the software verification Procedure 5,6,9,ok doesn't work on these new units.
