If the drive was old I would say this is typical of the DVD reading laser having dies. The CD laser is still good and so it can read them. I had the very same problem but my drive was older with about 1000 DVD burns under its belt. HArdly ever used for CD read or burn.

Which dvd's dose it nolonger recognize ? ... there's a difference between commercial , and home burnt dvd's ... and just "reading vs ripping" ...

You have " drive info is light scribe dvd super multi /cd writer " ... ok , what is the brand / model ... pointless without this info .

Hp's are finicky thing's ... as you have not filled in the pc spec's ... is it a p4 system ... I dont recall the drive model involved , or if there is more than one with the same problem's , but if the extra 4 power pin is connected to the motherboard , then it can cause's problem's for some drive's ... consider returning it in exchange for an lg unit ... it's what we did to fix the issue with hp p4's .

    ------------------------------------

If it dosent recognize any , then

1: Check cable connection and jumper setting on drive , be aware of "what is master / slave" incase two drive's reside on the same cable ... best if optical's are not mixed with hd's on same cable's .

2: Check for firmware update ... this may help it too recognize more media brand's , and better burning support for newer brand's on the market .

3: Clean the thing with a good optical disc cleaner ... not a cheap retard $5.00 junk cleaner .

    The optical drive's only have "1" len's ...

There are many reason's why such an event can take place on a modern pc system ... "software vs hardware vs user caused input event" , but the original post dose not contain specific information that would be required ... so in this case ... it is not possible to know the extent of the problem without the specific's , nor list a possible cure for the given issue at this current time .
