    hey guys !!

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-S55SP laptop with DVD +- RW . . . . .my laptop is almost a year old and i m now facing a problem with its writer and reader as well.........it reads some discs and that even sometimes...i put the disc in(it may be a cd or a dvd)..,and writer makes some usual sounds.but it dosnt read(it dosnt rotate or u can say it dosnt revolve the disc)...but it does that for some discs...
......it even does the same thing for writing !!

is there a hardware problem or a software problem and can it be cured......

    A long shot

Remove and reinstall the drive. Sometimes the drive connections loosen up on laptops due to movement.

Good. Cleaning the lens is something that most people forget to do periodically.

Some laptops have a release slide or a couple of phillips screws on the underside that will let you slide out the drive. No risk in doing it that way, but you probably wouldn't want to try disassembling the laptop without a step-by-step shop manual for it, if the drive doesn't slide out. I've disassembled a few and it's not clear how to do it without a good manual.

You didn't mention what you were trying to read or write. Is it DVD-R, and if so, what brand are you using?

Go to the SONY website. Check for the maintainence manual for your computer. Many manufacturers provide a maintainence manual in PDF format. Usually drive removal does not require actually opening the case

The process of removing the drive and reinstalling is usually simple once you have the instructions. That is part of why the fit on the connectors tends to loosen.

Almost one year? Then it is under warranty.

Make Sony fix the problem. After all, that is what the warranty that came with your $2000 widget is for.
