If I'm posting at the wrong board lemme know, I'll take it somewhere else.

    Merry Post-Christmas, by the way.

I got a camcorder for Christmas, and I'm having a pretty sucky time trying to get it to work.

    It's a Sony DVD recorder, supports mini-disks.

So I put in my mini-disk, and it brings up the folder where the files are. I check my videos, most are in a .vob, .IFO, and .BUP format.

I can play them in Windows Media Player, but I want a way to save them and edit them.

    What I want is:

1.) A way to save the files to my computer
2.) A way to play these files in a movie editor
3.) A way to edit these movies, maybe a program recommendation or two.

    Thanks in advance.

Everything you read on copying, editing and reauthoring a regular DVD should apply. And there are lots written on the subject.

If possible, come up with some kind of excuse to whoever gave this to you as to why you need to exchange it (manufacturing defect, etc...) and get a MiniDV camcorder

The video is actually in the vob files, the rest are part of the DVD file structure. See "What is DVD" at the top left for more info.

    1) DVD Decrypter, ISO Buster, DVDFab Decrypter, DVD Shrink, etc... Look in the Tools section (at left) under DVD Rip Tools.

    2) Once ripped you can play the vob's in many players such as Media Player Classic or editors such as MPEG Video Wizard.

    3) MPEG Video Wizard or MPEG Video Wizard DVD, free for 30 days, roughly $100 after that.

Don't listen to these hacks. You will love the DVD camera.

Did the cam come with Picture Package? If so, load up the disc in the DVD Viewer application. This will allow you to copy the MPEGs to your PC - avoiding the whole VOB thing.

    Then use Womble to edit.

Of course, I can go into the whole "why DVD is better than miniDV thing."
