I've created two videos on Windows Movie Maker, and they're now completed and in WMP Video Format.
A friend of mine told me that I would have to convert them to a different format if I wanted to burn them onto a DVD-R that I wanted to watch on my television.

    Is this true?

How would I go about putting these two short videos on a DVD-R that I can play on my DVD player?

(If this is the wrong board for this, I'm really sorry. I've just been very frustrated with this lately, and simply cannot figure it out. I wanted to burn them using Windows Media Player- Possible?)

    Thanks.

WMM doesn't output MPEG video, which you need for a DVD. In Windows Movie Maker there is a option for DV output. Use that. Then you can then convert the DV to a MPEG-2 file with audio that will be DVD compliant. You author that to the DVD format and burn it. For the DVD format, look to the upper left for 'WHAT IS' DVD.

For easy, you can use the DV output and put it into ConvertXToDVD and it will create a MPEG and author it to a DVD file you can burn. Or you can encode the DV to MPEG-2 with one of the encoders from 'Tools' to the left, then author it with another program. There are also authoring programs in 'Tools'. There are freeware programs for both operations.

Guides for these processes are in 'CONVERT' and 'AUTHOR', again to the left.

    And welcome to our forums.

Hello, thanks so much for your help!

I've saved the file in DV format from WMM.
And I've been looking for a good freeware program to convert it to MPEG-2, like you said. I tried the ConvertXtoDVD, but it was a trial version, and I couldn't get it to work very well.
And I'm not sure which of those encoders would suit me. I tried several other free programs, none seemed to work. I tried Diko, but after I closed the window, it wouldn't open back up for me for some reason. I clicked on the icon for it to start, but it didn't do anything.

If there's a specific program or encoder you would recommend, I'l really appreciate it! ^.^

yeah, that's true. You can't burn the files to dvd directly but need somthing more.

    some tools to do this:
    convertXtoDVD
    DVDshrink

Most all the freeware encoders take a little more work to set up than the payware ones. HC and QuEnc are popular for freeware. TMPGEnc encoder is easy, but it's payware. ConvertXToDVD works very well and is simple to use. There is also a freeware version available on the same page, DivxToDVD.

You will also need an authoring program if you use a separate encoder. Freeware, DVDAuthorgui or Gui for dvdauthor. Easier is the payware TMPGEnc DVD Author. Finally to burn the DVD, ImgBurn does well, and it's freeware.
