I have an odd issue with copying large files off of a CD-R. I had a few archived files, each about 500 to 600 MB RAR files. When I tried to copy them to my hard drive, the drive took a long time at nearly 30 minutes to copy it.

BUT when I opened it with WinRAR and extracted them directly to the hard drive, the whole thing took just seconds rather than minutes for the same size.

I checked the properties of the IDE controller, the DVD burner is set to UDMA4. The drive was recently flashed with updated firmware.

So why is it that copying a single file is slower than extracting them through WinRAR and re-RARing them on the hard drive? And don't tell me it's copy protection or something as those were my own archived files. If it was a commercial CD, I could understand the slowness to deter illegal ripping but I shouldn't be penalized for trying to rip *my* own CDs.

I suspect the problem lies in how explorer reads/copies files, it isn't very efficient.
