Occasionally I need to salvage DVD films which have been scratched. I've been using DVDshrink but after reading https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=315235 I've began to wonder if this is the best bet. That thread would appear to be claiming that you are better going thru re-encoding to make films fit onto a DVD5.

What does the panel think? If DVDshrink is not good enough for dropping file size down, then it will mean yet another step (!) and hopefully one which is simple.

Does Nero Recode remove CSS or other means which inhibit backups?

Most of the time for me personally dvd shrink works just fine. It's a lot quicker than reencoding the film. You have to decide for yourself if the quick ease of dvd shrink outways any potential gains in a full reencode.

If you want to use another program to do the transcoding you can always use dvd fab decrypter or ripit4me first to remove the protection and then open the folder on your harddrive for compressing.

I have found that DVD2One has much "compression". However, it is not free.

    No it isn't ....

And no Nero Recode will not remove css encryption .... DVDShrink will .... however it won't remove sony arccos or ripgaurd protection .... use ripit4me and then DVDShrink to make it fit a dvdr

  6. DVDshrink keeps a video in MPEG2 format, while Nero Recode uses the MP4 format. Both are based from the same author. You can also use ANYDVD as a driver so that the latest copy protection scheme is eliminated.
