Some have told me that DL in DVD players can be iffy, problematic. Do others find this true?

Yup, I have a stack of expensive coasters to prove it.

While most settop DVD players will play DVD-R and DVD+R, very few will play DVD-DL.

    Wow, did not know this.

I thought Dual Layer was the holy grail for copying then watching non-copyrighted movies on a (can't remember dvd-9, ie one that goes over 2 hours).

So this is not a good option for movies without copy protection. Better to compress or spread out over 2 disc (dvd -5 right?)

Well the whole purpose of copying dvds is to preserve the original and use the copy so the originals won't get ruined..

that's what I'm asking Lou: if these copies don't play well, then, and here it is again:

Afraid so. You may find that some of the later Divx, Xvid, play anything including a piece of wet cardboard players may be OK with DVD-DL, but the technology is too new for most mainstream players to have caught up yet.

I think it's more of how well the player was made to begin with.

I have 2 diff. model players from long before DVDR media that both play every format i throw in them, DVD-R DVD+R & DL+R.

Some players will play DL media very well, some play but so do badly & some will not play DL at all.
