  1. I use Firefox 2.0.0.1. When one places the cursor over e.g. a subject-heading in this forum one can read the first part of what is written under that subject. However earlier there also came a background so one could easily read the text. Now there is no background to the text so it appears over the other text (the subject heading) . It is therefore hard to read the text.
Is there some way to cange this? I tried under Tools but no change appeared.

    Have you tried:

Tools: Options: Content: Fonts and Colors --> Colors: enable Allow pages to choose their own colors...

I just did the same thing as you by unchecking that box...

    Good luck.

  3. Yes, I have tried all alternatives under Tools: Options: Content: Fonts and Colors. This error began as I remember it when I installed the new Firefox. There are also no colours on the internet pages of e.g this page we are using now (videohelp.com). It is only text on white background. I can change the background to another colour via the desktop but I cannot use the original colour. I downloaded an old Mozilla browser 1.7.12 and that gave the correct colours.

    I have tried:
Explorer 6 - it gives text on white background which it should not and the text appearing with the cursor has a correct background.
Mozilla 1.7.12 works correct with correct background colours and text from the cursor has a correct background.
Firefox 2.0.0.1 - gives text on white background and the text appearing with the cursor has no background and is therefore hard to read.

If you can't fix it through the color settings box then maybe you can find it by typing in about:config in the address bar then hitting Enter. That displays the internal settings for Firefox. I looked but didn't see it in there.

Here is what I can do by changing 2 check boxes. The top photo shows the white background/black text under the cursor. The second shows what I normally see. Note the two check boxes for each display.

    Good luck.

Also, do you have any extensions installed which could possibly be altering the page?

Do you have cookies enabled? One thing you can try is the Site layout: section at the bottom of the bar to the left. Change the style to something else, and see if the problem still exists. Or you can do what I'd be more likely to do - delete the cookies for videohelp, and see if that helps.

(Of course, that's a do-at-your-own-risk solution, as I don't know if you store your logon information in the cookie. I could never get 'log you on automatically' options to work on any forum or anywhere else, anyway. )

  6. I think I have tried everything now, also changing the site layout but nothing changes the page.

I have also checked the box "allow pages to use their own colors, instead of my selection above". There is no difference to the other alternative, when I check "use system colors".

It seems as if I have to use the old Mozilla to get the correct internet page.

In the firefox address bar type:

    about:config

hit Enter. This shows the settings for the browser.

    Look down the list for:

    browser. display. use_document_colors = true

    browser. display. use_system_colors = false

(To change the true/false value just double click the entry. Be very careful and make sure you are doing things right. When done - close)

The firefox site explains all the entries here:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries

    Good luck.

  8. I tried to change these 2 lines in about:config but it gives no difference. I also changed in Tools/Options and could see that at the same time I said OK to the change it changed in "about:config" to true or false.

When I let Firefox upgrade from v1 it then developed a problem... I was unable to install add-ons. After quite a bit of snooping I tracked the problem down to an option that had been unselected in my previous version that was not an option in the upgrade. I was able to find the item(s) in about:config and change them. That fixed the problem but that was pretty hard to find. Firefox honored my preferences.

It might be easier to do a complete uninstall of Firefox, delete the folders, etc, then reinstall. That might change back whatever is causing this error to the default settings. Besides that I don't know what to tell you. Doing just a plain uninstall of firefox would probably not change the preference settings back to default, it didn't in my case. I could reinstall v1 and it worked perfect but not in the newer version.

This sounds similar to what it is doing on you. A change (or error) that the newer version is honoring....

    Good luck.

I believe Firefox doesn't delete the profile folder when you uninstall.

I should probably note that if you do delete your profile, it's possible to make copies of certain files before you do it, and then import the copies into the new profile. I usually copy the bookmarks file and the history files (the latter, for no apparent reason ). Anything else probably risks carrying over whatever messed up the profile in the first place, though.

Firefox is pretty tough sometimes especially when I get in there and mess it up. Like just a few minutes ago. I was making a normal download and accidentally checked the download box "Do this automatically for files like this form now on". I wanted to to open the file instead of saving it to disk. Well you can guess what happened then. Every file I attempt to download Firefox opens it first....... and I can't find where to change it back to the way I like it.

For the world to know...... When you open a download file instead of saving to disk Firefox saves a copy of the file in your Temporary folder (in my case c:\windows\temp because I changed it to that in XP-System Properties-Advanced-Environment Variables) then opens the file (like a zip file) then offers you no popup means of saving the file otherwise. You will need to either move the file from your environment variable temporary folder to use your zip application and save the file manually (which will now give you 2 copies of the file on your hdd)

To change firefox v2 back to "always ask" you need to delete the newly created action in Tools -Options - Content - File Type - Manage - Download Actions. Easy after you figure out what in the world....
