I've read a lot of posts here about dvd recorders on hereand which one record the best quality
and have the best functions. So i've decided on either new or refurbished models:

    JVC DR-M10
    TOSHIBA D-R5

Both have a firewire. The Jvc does record lpcm audio in xp mode though.
Which do you think is the best?
I don't need a current model with a hard drive or vcr that I wont use. Thanks.

I can offer a general opinion, not knowing the specific models. My philosophy of avoiding JVC products has served me well over the years. JVC tends to be cheaply made, IMO.

    I'd go with the Toshiba

  3. I have repaired and tested two JVC DR-M10S's. US versions of the M10 are prone to the "loading" bug where the front panel display starts to display the message "loading" after which the unit is locked up. The problem is caused by low drive levels between some integrated circuits which can be brought on by the power supply. The supply has two parts running at 94 degrees C. that cause premature aging of the parts.

The DR-MV1 ( combo unit ) and the non-US M10S units do not have this problem. The M10 has been replaced by the M100 which also does not seem to have this problem.

These two M10's ( one made in China, the other in Japan ) do not correctly reproduce NTSC IRE=7.5 black levels which are the black levels produced by US VHS and standard broadcast TV. The results of these tests can be found on this thread,

M10S encoding is good, especially if you have tapes that are noisy.

    I ordered a JVC M10.
Im surprised Capmaster you dont like their products,
I thought they usually put out great products.
I hope I dont get the loading problem.
I ordered a refurbished model so it shouldn't be a problem.
Sounds like this machine is ideal for transferring vhs tapes if it helps with noisy pictures.

  5. As mentioned, the power supply/interface problems with this model only pertain the the US NTSC model. No other JVC model is affected. If you do get the loading problem, JVC will repair it. It is not considered a warranty repair. I have had a friend send in a 2004 unit for this problem and JVC repaired it two months ago without question. He was not the original owner either so they stand behind their product.

The only problem was that it took a month before it came back.

How much did they charge you to repair it?

  7. My friend paid about $15 shipping. JVC charged nothing.

Just my opinion. I've seen some of their product schematics, compared their circuit design guidelines with other brands, and decided they cut too many corners in years past.

Their products have the bells and whistles, sure, but in the meat and potatoes of their designs, specifically component selections (like using a 5.5v alum. electrolytic capacitor in a 5v circuit instead of a 6 or 7-volt rated part), creating traces too close together on the PWB (arcing and solder bridging), leaving flux residue on the PWB (grows "stuff" in humid climates), etc. Just a lot of little things that led me to believe their #1 priority is profit and not product longevity.

But, like I said, it's just my opinion, for what it's worth You might have good luck and make a liar out of me. I hope so

  12. I had two M10S's which I repaired for the loading bug. Both were tested with TYG02 ( dvd-r, X8 disks ). They were flawless burns.

    [edit]

    The other media I tried with the M10S's were Panasonic dvd-ram X2-3, TDK dvd-rw X2, fake TYG02 disks ( dvd-r X8 ), and TDK dvd-rw X4. The only disks not recognized were the TDK dvd-rw X4's.
