I purchased a Matrox APVe graphics card, and when I tried to install it, I noticed there isn't a PCI Express slot, available in my system.

My motherboard is the ASUS p4p800 Deluxe. It has an AGP graphics slot. The system was built with a Matrox Millenium G550 card in it. It also has 5 or 6 other PCI card slots. My UAD (audio effects) plug-in cards are in 2 of them.

The new Matrox APVe card will not fit into any of these slots. Can one of the slots be made to accomodate a PCI Express slot? The card calls for PCI Express x 16, as you know. How difficult is this to perform?

    Thanks - Andy

Take it back and get an AGP card, or upgrade your motherboard. PCI-E isn't just a different shaped slot, it's got to be supported by the MB chipsets as well.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that's what I'll probably do now. Too bad because I was REALLY looking fwd to using this card. I don't plan on changing my system so I'll have to look for an AGP card. So... am I right to say that you either have AGP slots OR PCIe slots (not both), for grahic cards on your system?

  4. The APVe is a great card for what it does. I have one in one of my computers.

There are (at least there were) a few motherboards with both AGP and PCIe slots.

Hi there. Well, I was told today that it wouldn't be worth trying to upgrade my motherboard, to anything that has the PCI Express slot, that is needed. The reasons being that, I'd probably be looking at new Ram, a processor, cooling and power supply as well. So, unless there is a motherboard out there that I can still use my trype of Ram and my P4 2.8 gig processor, and doesn't require the extra upgrades they thought would be nessecary... and that has the PCI Express slot, I don't think I have a choice but to re-sell this card. If someone has a better answer, please let me know. Thanks again for replying. - Andy
