i have a avi file that is 4.7gb and when i try to bun it with toast it tells me it only have 4.4gb available on the disc. how can i make it smaller to fit on a disc. also if i change the format to the ipod format so i could put it on my ipod would that format make it smaller to burn it on a disc? thanks to any help i can get.

I can answer part of your question - I think you can use Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) to convert the file to iPod format, and I think you can tweak the settings so that the iPod file is smaller than the original file.
I don't use Toast but I think Toast 7 can compress files to fit on standard DVDs.
