Hi all,
New to this forum so not sure where to post this (would be good if a mod could move it to the appropriate thread for me).
Thanks to the info in the capture card list from 2 years ago, i've managed to get my fly card half working. I've had similar experiences to many people there (right down to never recieving any replies from animation tech). I was able to do a direct comparison when i changed over to a dual system a while back (Win98 & XP on one computer). The card worked perfectly under Win98 with no hassles at all, but whenever i rebooted into XP, nothing (why print that the card is XP compatible all over the box, but not include the correct drivers on the install cd?).
Now i'm using the Phillips drivers and it's half working. I've got sound, but a blank, black screen, except when i switch to multi-channel preview mode. Then i can see that the card is actually working perfectly. There are probably some people laughing at my inability to solve such a simple problem - I hope so, 'cause i want an answer! I'm sure it's just one button i haven't enabled in the graphics card or something dumb like that.
By the way, I'm not running a dual OS anymore and am running on different computer to the one i had then.
Thanks anyone who can help me with this.

I'm not familiar with that card, but when video cards display a black screen with video, it's sometimes a problem with the cards 'overlay' settings. Check them in your display settings. Sometimes in the 'Troubleshoot' tab you can reduce the 'Hardware Acceleration' and that may work. Or look for some overlay adjustments in the card settings.
Another possibility is DirectX and a problem there, but that's just a guess.
Someone here familiar with that card may have better advice.
And welcome to our forums. -
Thanks for the advice and quick response. I'll keep experimenting with those ideas and see what happens. This might end up being one for people who've actually done battle with the card in person. This is the page I was referring to:
https://www.videohelp.com/capturecards.php?CaptureCardRead=142#comments
trouble is the discussion that was taking place on that page was at least 2 years ago. but going by that, this is a particularly infuriating piece of hardware, with a personality. works really well, if you can trick it into working. and then every person seems to have come up with a different way to do that. oh well, i like a challenge.
Thanks again, and a pleasure to be here -
okay, sorry for the double post. Tonight i'm gonna try the drivers & software suggested by "Roland from Other" (which was actually 4 years ago!). The best case scenario would be if someone from that thread was still on the forum (one of the people who were successful getting it working obviously). Hell, if i could get asio on an SBLive i should be able to do this.

You can click on a forum user's profile and see the last time they visited. Your other option (Which you may have already tried) is to do a Google search for the card and see what is out there on the net. If you are lucky, there may even be a users forum somewhere.

Thanks again redwudz! This seemed the best site on a preliminary google, but i can dig deeper later if it comes to that. I'll check the profile's like you said as well. I'm just chipping away at it a bit at a time at the moment, whilst juggling other stuff as well, so i'm not looking for immediate results. I'll do a bit more research before i post again, and let you know how that goes. cheers!

The problem you are experiencing is due to xp with sp1 .
There was issue's with many capture devices , cam's , capture cards and ms released a patch soon after to cure the problem .
It might have been also included within service pack 2 ... as I had recently sold and installed this card on a friends pc and there was no issue (sp2 preinstalled) and the card works perfectly .
It would also be worth while to test the card in different pci slots , as it can be very picky , and you will want the best performance you can get out of the device .
Also , dont pass the audio to the device , use the line-in directly on the pc sound device ... if you follow the manual , it will decrease picture quality .
Use it in VTR mode only ... dont even bother with the tuner section ... they where rubbish from day one ... this means you will need a couple of things .
1: Double ended rca adapter
2: One stereo headphone jack to rca cable
3: Single rca ended cable
Headphone jack to line-in on pc
Rca cable to rca video-in on capture device
Connect the rca's from the end of each to one side of the double rca adapter
From here you can use as long enough double ended rca cable to go from playback device to pc as you need .
This will give you the clearest picture available for your recordings .
----------------------------
Correct installation procedure must be followed exactly or it dosent work .
If device installed :
1: Turn pc off at power point and remove card
2: Uninstall all programs and drivers , reboot pc
Re-install :
1: Xp + sp1 ... install os patch or sp2 ... reboot pc
2: Install device drivers (yes they are on the cd) ... install them even if xp complains
3: Install the supplied program
4: Turn pc off at power point
5: Install card
6: After os has found device , and confirmed drivers (ignore xp's complaints if any) ... reboot
7: You may now run the supplied program and setup for capture in vtr mode ... make sure line-in is not disabled
Capture quality is dependant on pc specs ... the faster the better . -
My god!...that's thorough...i'm gobsmacked...
It's gonna take me a while to get through all that, i'll report back when i do...i've got to rethink all my patching, it's already fairly complex, i'm doing some of what you suggest already, but i'm still working out my new set up...(edit) ok, i'm using an AV splitter sent to the soundcard for all inputs, and just using the TVcard audio output when i use it for TV, so if i unplug that cable when i'm not using it, that should disable the onboard TVcard sound?...i was thinking about sending the TVcard audio out to the splitter...what would that do?...would it be disabled as long as the splitter was sending another channel?...(edit)
Can't thank you enough Bjs...this thread is gonna be a great resource for people in a similar situation in future...speaking of which:
virtual vcr: http://www.digtv.ws/
fly2000TV: http://auzol.narod.ru/
and the phillips drivers: http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/fly-video.html
some people had success solving problems using these...i would avoid "dscaler", which someone else suggested unless you're an expert...it seemed potentially unstable and dangerous otherwise...i'll add links to service packs etc. when i find them...cheers!!!...
(edit) how would i go about finding and identifying this patch you speak of?...what would it be called?...and how do i find out which drivers on the cd are specifically for XP - they are not labelled...have downloaded service pack 3...hasn't done anything so far, but i haven't uninstalled and reinstalled yet...can't really do that until i know how to locate XP drivers on cd, so this information is essential...cheers...(edit) -
alright!...we have contact...
it ended up being a combination of installing the XP service pack, uninstalling phillips drivers and software, rebooting, and then i installed Fly2000TV from http://auzol.narod.ru, and the "WDM drivers for Philips SAA713x"...
i have a feeling the phillips drivers may even have worked if i'd taken them off and reinstalled them fresh, or the official drivers off the cd for that matter...
i'm pretty sure it came down to the service pack...so big thanks to Bjs...if you check back, the thing i am curious about now is: are there more than one set of drivers on the official cd?...are there separate ones for Win98 and XP?...or just the one set works for all OS's?...and also my previous question (in the above post) concerning sending the TVcard audio output to the splitter, and then back into the soundcard input...what effect would this have exactly?...
Thanks again everyone!...
