  1. Hi,

I have an .mpg cartoon. It contains 3 cartoons in one file, not an episodic DVD. I want to cut out one of the cartoons so that I can make my grandson a collection of his favorites. I had no problem splitting the others using AVI Split but since this one isn't an .avi file, I tried using avi.net because it's supposed to be able to accept an MPG, MPEG2, DVD, VOB file, TS HDTV or an MPEG2 SVCD file as input.

When I input the .mpg file into avi.net, I received three messages in a row. The first one was
"MCI ERROR" Routine - [openMovie] A problem occured in initializing MCI.
    The second messaged was
"MCI ERROR" Routine - [GetSizeLocateMovie] The driver cannot recognize the specified command.
    The third message was
"Error [FILE INPUT] Index was outside the bounds of the array.
Is there something wrong with this file?

I would try opening the mpg file in virtualdubmpeg2. If it opens and you can scan through it, move the cursor to the start of the section you want to remove, and press Home. Move to the end of the section you want to remove, and press End. Hit the Del key, and that section will be gone. From here you can either save to an avi format (video -> Compression), or frameserve to an mpeg encoder.

guns1inger's suggestion will certainly work, but may I politely suggest that perhaps you might consider getting an MPEG editor such as MPEGVCR or VideoReDo? Both are easy to use and if you think you'll have an ongoing need to edit MPEG video, it would be very helpful to you to have one of them to use in the future for this kind of thing.

I almost hesitate to suggest this, because I haven't seen it posted in a long time, but I would demux the mpg first with BatchDemux (using "bbdemux" setting) and do the editing/cutting with Mpeg2Schnitt. Very easy to use, despite the occasional German in the gui, and very fast. No recompression, just cutting.
