I want to put some of my DVD movies on my ipod, so I need a dvd ripper that automatically rips the movie to mpg4 format. I can't afford the movies off itunes, so that's why I want to rip my dvd's instead. I'm not going to illegally sell anything, or give anyone else the movies, I just want to put them on my ipod for trips and such. Every time I tried to find my own dvd ripper (for free) my computer gets a virus. So I was hoping someone could give me some free dvd ripper suggestions. Thanks once again.

Thanks, but once before I had a program (that I can't seem to find anymore) that ripped the dvd straight onto an mpg4 format. This tells me I have to decrypt the dvd and then convert it which is actually a long process. Alot of people own iPods so hopefully they know of this program. But I definitely thankyou for the advice and putting in your time for me. THANKS!

Well if the source is a DVD then of course the first step is ripping it to your computer's HDD and the two most popular freeware DVD rippers are DVD Decrypter (outdated now but works with most DVD Videos) and DVDFab Decrypter (lacks some features in DVD Decrypter but will RIP any DVD as it is constantly updated).

Actually another one that some people think is even better is AnyDVD but that one has to be purchased.

Oh wait I almost forget the freeware program called RipIt4Me which I have yet to use but is quickly getting popular with alot of people.

My suggestion: try DVDFab Decrypter or RipIt4Me as both are updated constantly so either one should be able to rip any DVD Video out there.

    Hi,
I use this method to go directly from DVD to iPod MPEG-4 with no need to copy to HDD:
Running AnyDVD->Insert DVD->Open DVD in Nero Recode->Set iPod Profile->Wait->Sync to iPod. The 2-Pass quality is excellent there are no intermediate files on HDD and people will say it's hard on your DVD Drive but I've done over 50 movies with no issues at all and I've only run into 1 movie that AnyDVD on it's own couldn't handle. It's not free but it's stone reliable and as streamlined as this process can get, if you learn your way around Nero Recode you can do resolutions up to 640x480 for iPods with 1.2 firmware that look tremendous even on HDTV's, The "free-er" the software the more steps there will be, but excellent results can be achieved as well.
