I had a gift card for CC so with Smurphy's suggestion, I bought the sony gold -r and have never had a coaster...ever
With a little luck, they'll ring them up at the wrong price like they did me...lower of course.
Whatever the speed, I burn at half.

When buying Sony DVD-R media you want to make sure that you are buying Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs.

So here is the deal with SONY DVD-R media.

Look for packages (I know this applies to the 50 packs) that say MADE IN JAPAN on the package. Some will say MADE IN TAIWAN and are to be avoided.

Now once you find a package that says MADE IN JAPAN look at the top. You know how "cake" packs (also called "spindle" packs) have a lil foam thing on the top? Well if the foam thing is a perfect circle ... avoid ... even if the package says MADE IN JAPAN. However if the package says MADE IN JAPAN and the foam thing has a hexigonal shape then it is Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media.

In short you really just need to look for the hexigonal foam thing ... I've never seen a SONY package of DVD-R discs that weren't TAIYO YUDEN media when the hexigonal foam thing is there.

If the package says MADE IN JAPAN but has a circle foam thing then it is NOT Taiyo Yuden media. If the package says MADE IN TAIWAN it is not Taiyo Yuden media.

Granted this method of determining Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs in SONY packages may change at any time but it has been this way for a long while now so hopefully it won't change anytime soon.

This is important information as Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media is one of the very best and SONY DVD-R media does go on sale from time to time so you can get Taiyo Yuden for very cheap this way.

However you can buy Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media on-line. They also make DVD+R media that is very good should you like DVD+R over DVD-R (although it is my opinion to stay with DVD-R whenever possible). The best place IMHO to buy Taiyo Yuden DVD media on-line is at RIMA.COM

Another excellent choice is Verbatim DVD-R media. The 16x DVD-R discs by Verbatim are every bit as good as Taiyo Yuden (some claim even better but I think that is pushing it a bit). The benefit of buying Verbatim 16x DVD-R discs is that they are easy to find at various retail outlets plus they are often on sale.

Keep an eye on BEST BUY and OFFICE MAX when it comes to Verbatim DVD-R sales. I've also seen both BEST BUY and STAPLES have sales on the SONY DVD-R discs.

In closing I cannot stress just how important it is to use quality DVD media. When it comes to DVD-R the only two worth buying are Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. As for DVD+R I know that Taiyo Yuden is the best you can buy but I don't follow DVD+R that much so there may be other brands of DVD+R media that are just as good but you I do know that you can't go wrong with Taiyo Yuden DVD+R media when buying DVD+R media.

    P.S.
Taiyo Yuden 8x/16x DVD-R discs will have the following MEDIA ID: TYG02/TYG03

Verbatim 16x DVD-R discs will have the following MEDIA ID: MCC 03RG20

You can get MEDIA ID info from programs such as DVDInfoPro or Nero CD-DVD Speed. Also ImgBurn (if the DVD is blank).

It's very RARE now to find SONY media with TAIYO YUDEN MEDIA ID from stores like BEST BUY, COMPUSA & OFFICE DEPOT. The best bet would be to buy VERBATIM DVD+R/-R. Last time I was at BEST BUY I was lucky to find old stock of SONY DVD-R that were TAIYO YUDEN and yes it had the hexagon ring on the spindle. For me RIMA.COM is too expensive to ship to Hawaii so I make do with the VERBATIM media.

I think the last pack of SONY DVD-R discs that I bought that were Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs came from Staples and when they are on SALE the price is definitely cheaper than RIMA.COM

Although there is nothing wrong with Verbatim DVD-R discs. I find them to be just as good as Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. When Verbatim is on SALE they are also cheaper than buying from RIMA.COM

    I don't use DVD+R discs myself.

  7. I don't have a 1693S anymore but if I recall, it did quite well with MCC004 (Verbatim DVD+R 16x). Those are easy to find and often on sale as well. Good luck.

Absolutely. The KC4B by Codeking (Codeguys site) was a remarkable improvement over stock firmware from Lite-On for this drive.
