Hello everyone, I'm planning to buy a new DVD Player. Right now I have LG DVD/VCR COMBI DVC8700 and I'm not satisfied with it. I'm looking for a player that can play DIVX format. Also recorder with a hard drive would be good, but DIVX is the number one priority. Money is not really an issue, I can spent a couple of hundred pounds as long as it will be worth it. I'm from UK, London. Please suggest some DVD/DIVX player that can be bought in UK.

And a few questions. Couldn't find the answers anywhere:

Will DIVX players play Avi/DIVX format from a DVD disc if movies were burned on DVD as data, not as Video DVD? Also same thing but with DVD RW disc?

What if AVI movie was not encoded with DIVX, how long will it take to convert it to DIVX?

    Thank you,

    SpyJoe

Yes, a Divx/Xvid is burned as a data disc. Should be the same with a R/W DVD.

How long it would take to encode from other formats depends on your CPU speed, the codecs you use, their settings and the encoder program used. There are too many variables to make any guesses.

For players, you can look to the left for 'DVD Players' and use Divx/Xvid as part of the search. You would also want it to be a PAL compatible player to be able to play your regular DVDs.

Other can probably give you specific player recommendations.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks a lot for the answers...

So far I found this one: Philips DVP5960

Looks like it plays everything and it costs 70 pounds in a local shop... Is it any good?

I noticed that there are very cheap dvd players that play every format and the brand is good and there are expensive ones with the same brand and play same formats. What's the difference between them? Why such a big difference in price. Just quality?

The difference is usually quality, not always playback quality, but usually build quality.
