I am wondering if it is possible to create a desktop icon that would shut down XP
I had an icon like this for ME, but I can't manage to do one for XP.

Windows XP comes with a command line utility SHUTDOWN.EXE

To shutdown XP make a shortcut that runs (with a time delay = 1 second)
    SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

    To restart XP use
    SHUTDOWN -r -t 01

I use a popular freeware program called OTS (One Touch Shutdown) on a couple of computers. It allows one click shutdown, standby, reboot, or other options with Windows. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/d.mills2/afm/ots.htm It is available on other sites by a Google search for 'OTS'.

It's one solution to Windows convoluted shutdown procedure...... ' Yes, dammit, I really want to shutdown the damn computer or I wouldn't have clicked shutdown in the first place.'

    Training a new user:

Stiltman: to shutdown your computer, click the Start button then Shutdown, then click the down arrow and select shutdown (if its not already selected) and click OK

    New user: you're joking right?

    Stiltman: No...

New user: Dude that's the most retarded thing I've heard.

    Stiltman: Blame it on MS

I also use the shutdown.exe command from a desktop shortcut

We don't want to forget the older AT computers. After you've done all the clicking and selecting, all that happens is a new screen comes up to tell you, 'It is Now Safe to Turn Off Your Computer', and then you still have to push the power button to turn it off.

People STILL shut down their computers?

I guess it comes in handy if something goes horribly wrong, for most things, hibernation works just as well and is a good bit faster loading and unloading.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Thanks for the question and even more thanks for the answers. I downloaded One Touch Shutdown last night and it works great. I don't know why but on my Xp system when I would press the start button it would do to its popup and than it would give me the option to log off or shut down of logoff. Sometimes pressing the shutdown would shut down the sys. other times it would take a few seconds than generate another popup asking if I wanted to shutdown. Always pissed me off. Now its gone
