I own a Xbox 360 and I am interested in purchasing the HD-DVD add-on for it. But all HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs are made with a 1080p resolution, and my HDTV only displays 480p and 1080i(There are a few HDTVs with 1080p capability). I recently read a Microsoft article that claimed "a 1080i picture will look identical to a 1080p picture" when playing a HD-DVD. Is this true? And if so what is the point of 1080p discs.

Has anyone backed up the DVD side of a HD-DVD Combo Format disc?

As far as I know the xbox will output as 720p/1080i over analog component or progressive resolutions over VGA (1360 x 768 max).

I haven't seen anything new on the official Xbox site or Microsoft.com on the subject. I have found mixed opinions on the issue. (1080p vs. 1080i)

It varies by HDTV technology. 1080p is usually passed over HDMI only. 1080i can be sent over YPbPr, or HDMI.

Most sets that accept 1080i will actually display at far lower resolution.

If the resolution is lower on a 1080i display what is the point of this player?, it has no HDMI output, and 99.9% (just guessing) of current HDTV owners and Xbox 360 owners do not have 1080p Televisons.

I thought highest resolution XBox games were 720p. If it also plays HD DVD, it will propbaly only play at the resolutions offered for the XBox like 1080i/720p or max 1360x768 over VGA.

The highest resolution Xbox games display at 1080i. The player is a add-on to the 360 and the Xbox does support 1080p. The article also said 1080p is possible through component cables.

The games are 720p max. Those are scaled to 1080i for interface because few HDTV sets accept 720p. Most HDTV sets will have displays that max well below 1440x1080 with some as low as 960x540.
