I'd go with something like: http://au.lge.com/md/product/prodcategorylist.do?actType=detail&currPage=1&categoryId=...tId=1100001016
I wouldn't be buying a SD set. -
IŽd go to Wal Mart or something like that, choose a cheap brand X and keep it just while I buy a good HD one...

You should give some indication of price target but here goes.
First: Any TV over 25" manufactured after July must have a ATSC digital tuner. If you are getting your signal over the air you will need a digital tuner to get anything after 2009.
Most sets with "digital tuners" fall into the "digital TV" category where the image is received to a frame buffer (often 640x480 for 4:3 or 720x480 for widescreen).
With such a set you will be able to tune both SD and HD OTA digital channels but the display will be at the resolution of the frame buffer.
A quality example is this one

If you know you will be using cable or DBS over the life of this set, you might be able to find a closeout deal on an analog set. Just be sure to get one with Y,Pb,Pr inputs. That will be the standard for quality cable or DBS tuner inputs.
A low end HD model will cost about double. HD capable cable tuners will soon be the standard. To see a difference at 32" you would need to sit close. -

Is there a name for that? Component? -

Yes analog component = YPbPr = Green-Blue-Red RCA connectors.
Analog component can handle 480i (SD), 480p (EDTV), 720p (HDTV) and 1080i (HDTV).
DVD players include these outputs (at 480i or 480p) as do current "HD" cable boxes. Future cable boxes will all have these higher quality outputs.
$500 could get you a low end 32" CRT HDTV if you shop carefully.
I goofed above and linked a 27" model. Here is a widescreen 30" Toshiba.

Here is a 4:3 Samsung with HD capability.

As said above, the HD effect requires that you sit closer than what you would consider normal. Since screens are measured diagonally, a widescreen TV needs to be larger to appear as the same size (e.g. 40" widescreen would have about the same picture height as 32" 4:3) -
OK guys, I've about decided on this one. Is it missing anything? Anything like it better out there?
